Sometimes with round characters I do not want their flaws to emerge. I want to protect them. Or, myself. I am in the grocery store with David. It is Tuesday, November seventh, and here is our friend, the teacher. Nearly two years ago Rudd enlisted us to support Bernie, and now David, she, and I stand in a long aisle of tea and coffee. David and I have come from the polling station in the town hall. He is searching for Earl Grey tea, for which one seems most like he would get in London. The teacher lifts up packages of green tea: lemon/green? Just green? Mint and green? She clutches several boxes, and I am in a big, chunky sweater an artist friend has knit. Under it is a Nasty Woman T-shirt, not that I love this woman, though a red heart is across my chest. I am eager to have a woman in the White House, and my mother was born not long after women got the right to vote. Because she has died this year, I vote in her stead. All these things happen at once: the tea cartons held aloft by my husband and my friend, and I yank up my sweater to show off the T-shirt, sure we share an allegiance. David says, Well tomorrow this will all be over, and our friend says Hillary is a crook. And, I am too stunned to hear what is said next.
